If the Vembanad route is about wide-open water, the Kuttanad village canals are the opposite: narrow, green and intimate. Kuttanad is the rice bowl of Kerala and one of the very few regions on earth where farming is carried out below sea level, behind low earthen bunds that hold back the water.
What the cruise is like
The boat leaves the busy Finishing Point and threads into progressively narrower canals. Life happens right at the water’s edge — people washing clothes, children waving from the bank, country boats ferrying goods, ducks herded across the water, and the occasional toddy shop tucked under the palms. Bright green paddy fields stretch out below the level of the canal itself, held back by the bunds.
This route is quieter and more personal than the open-lake cruise, and it’s the one repeat visitors and photographers tend to prefer.
Timings & practical notes
Standard overnight timings apply: check in 12:00 PM, check out 9:00 AM, with cruising paused 5:00 PM–7:00 AM. Some of the very narrowest canals are better suited to smaller and mid-size boats; our team will match your boat to the route when you book.
