The Punnamada to Vembanad route is the classic Alleppey backwater cruise and the one most first-time visitors picture. Boats board at the Nehru Trophy Finishing Point on Punnamada Lake — the same stretch of water where the famous snake-boat race is decided each August — and cruise out into Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala and the heart of the Kerala backwater system.
What the cruise is like
After a midday check-in, the boat eases away from the Finishing Point and out onto open water. Vembanad is wide and calm, so this route trades narrow-canal intimacy for big, luminous lake views — especially at sunset, when the whole surface turns gold. You’ll pass Chinese fishing nets, small fishing craft, and the low green line of the shore dotted with villages and coconut palms.
Because much of the route is on open lake, it suits larger boats comfortably and is an easy, gentle introduction to the backwaters for families and couples.
Timings
Overnight houseboats check in at 12:00 PM and check out at 9:00 AM. Cruising pauses between 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM, when the boat anchors at a safe spot for the night with the crew onboard — so the lake sunset and the quiet, star-lit evening at anchor are both part of the experience.
