The monsoon is Alleppey’s most underrated season. From June to September the backwaters turn deep green, the crowds thin out, and prices fall to their lowest of the year. If you don’t mind some rain, it can be the most atmospheric time to cruise.
What it’s actually like
Monsoon rain in Kerala tends to come in bursts rather than all day — a heavy shower, then bright, washed-clean skies. The paddy fields and palms are at their lushest, the light is dramatic, and there’s a calm, green stillness that the busy peak season doesn’t have. From the covered deck of a houseboat, watching the rain move across the water is genuinely lovely.
Is it safe?
Houseboats operate through the monsoon and the crews are experienced with the conditions. On the rare occasions weather is severe, cruising may be adjusted for safety — our team keeps an eye on conditions and will advise. As always, the boat anchors safely overnight with the crew onboard.
Onam & the boat-race season
August–September brings Onam, Kerala’s biggest festival, with special food and a festive mood — and it’s snake-boat-race season on the backwaters. It’s a wonderful, culturally rich time to visit.

Who it suits
Monsoon cruising is ideal for travellers who want lush scenery, low prices and quiet backwaters, and who are relaxed about occasional rain. If you specifically want guaranteed dry, sunny days, look at November–February instead.
