An Alleppey houseboat is a genuinely great family trip — kids love the open water, the changing views, and the novelty of sleeping on a boat. A little planning makes it smooth.
Which boat to pick
For most families, a 2 or 3 bedroom private houseboat is the sweet spot: enough room for parents and kids, a shared living and dining area, and the whole boat to yourselves. Larger families or multi-family groups can go up to 4 or 5 bedrooms. Browse all houseboats and filter by bedrooms, or jump to Deluxe and Premium tiers.
Children under 5 typically stay free; confirm exact terms for your group when you book.
Food
All overnight packages include meals — freshly cooked Kerala, South and North Indian dishes. If your children prefer milder or specific food, just tell the crew in advance; they’re used to accommodating family requests.
Safety & comfort
- Boats carry standard safety equipment; keep an eye on younger children near the open deck edges.
- An AC boat helps kids sleep well in the warmer months (AC generally runs 9 PM–7 AM on Deluxe; on-demand on Premium and Luxury).
- Cruising pauses 5 PM–7 AM, so evenings are calm and anchored — good for family dinner and an early night.
Timings
Check in at 12:00 PM, check out at 9:00 AM. That’s one relaxed afternoon of cruising, a peaceful night at anchor, and a gentle morning — an easy rhythm for children.
Tips
- Pack light layers, mosquito repellent, and any favourite snacks.
- Bring a card game or two for the anchored evening.
- Ask about a shorter day cruise if a full overnight feels like a lot with very young children.
